The floral display on the limestone grasslands and pavements on the Ingleborough NNR has made for spectacular walks this summer despite the regular heatwaves we have been experiencing – even Ingleborough has managed to feel hot at times!
Early in the summer swathes of bird’s-eye primroses and early purple orchids carpeted the ground, followed by waves of an ever-changing colour palette, from the delicate white and yellow of limestone and lady’s bedstraws and the pinks and purples of thyme, salad burnet and betony. The orchids have been abundant this year with common- and heath-spotted, southern marsh, fragrant, frog, greater butterfly and small white all putting on a show. Even our tiny endemic Yorkshire sandwort put on a good display.
