Visit Ingleborough

Immerse yourself in the incredible Yorkshire Dales.

Rugged, wild, and beautiful

The Yorkshire Dales are celebrated for their space, scenery, and wildlife; Ingleborough's presence and views are unmatched in the western Dales.

Through our partnership project, we aim to make Ingleborough the beacon for nature’s recovery in the Dales — reviving a vast, wild landscape where nature is once more thriving and abundant.

And where people feel inspired to enjoy and protect it.

Ingleborough National Nature Reserve

The Wild Ingleborough project area is comprised of seven Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserves, within or adjacent to a larger area owned by Natural England. Between us we look after 1200 Ha of grassland, bog, wood pasture, limestone pavement and rugged fell – from the river to the summit ridge of Ingleborough, there’s something for everyone!

Since the 1990s Natural England has managed the Ingleborough National Nature Reserve, and it was through an ambition to connect the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserves with this larger protected area, that Wild Ingleborough was first imagined.

In September 2025, the Ingleborough National Nature Reserve  was officially extended to include all of Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's reserves in the Ingleborough area, as part of the King's Coronation Series of National Nature Reserves. Recognising the important collaborative working between these two organisations over the years, the new NNR designation will help to safeguard the area’s precious wildlife and habitats so future generations can continue to enjoy them.

Below you can discover the unique character of the different parts of our reserve, and plan how to get the most from your visit.

Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Nature Reserves

On the eastern and northern flanks of Ingleborough, a series of wildlife-rich nature reserves are owned and managed by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. Some of these reeserves have been protected for nature for several decades, while others, including Ashes Shaw and Bellfield’s Pasture, came under the Trust's care more recently thanks to the generosity of the local community and supporters. These reserves have been managed as part of the larger Wild Ingleborough project area since 2021, are now all incorporated in the Ingleborough National Nature Reserve.

Enjoy your visit

This area is really popular with visitors, but it is also a working landscape. You can help keep it special by:

Sticking to the marked footpaths and rights of way when not on open access land, and leave all gates as you found them

Keep your dogs on a lead so that they don’t frighten livestock or disturb protected ground-nesting birds

Park responsibly, do not block gateways and passing points, and use official carparks. Or alternatively, consider travelling by train wherever possible - Ribblehead and Horton-in-Ribblesdale stations are right on Ingleborough's doorstep

Please support the local economy by using some of our many excellent local businesses while you are here

With a little planning and care, you can enjoy the wild beauty of Ingleborough, while ensuring you consider the people who live and work here, and the wildlife and animals that call this landscape home.

Ingleborough's wildlife

Ingleborough and the surrounding landscape is estimated to home a third of the UK’s plant species — which in turn provide places for butterflies and birds to rest, feed and find sanctuary.
